Increasing efforts to address these issues emphasize a holistic approach that considers both physical, social, cognitive, and psychological elements. Central to this approach is the concept of physical literacy, which provides a framework for linking engagement in physical activity with positive health outcomes. Unlike mere accumulation of minutes in physical activity, physical literacy prioritizes developing motivation, confidence, competence, knowledge, and understanding to support an active lifestyle. This foundational understanding empowers individuals of all ages to embrace and sustain health-promoting behaviors that positively affect overall well-being. The benefits of regular physical activity extend beyond physical fitness and encompass enhancements in mood, stress reduction, and cognitive functioning. Nonetheless, myriad barriers often prevent people from maintaining an active lifestyle. Physical literacy can empower people by focusing on, and not limited to, enjoyable experiences, movement skill mastery, and self-efficacy. Individuals who find personal value and joy in movement are more likely to maintain an active lifestyle. This empowerment often translates into mental health benefits like heightened self-esteem, increased social connectedness, and lower anxiety and depression levels.

This Research Topic aims to investigate the intersection of physical literacy and its potential impact on mental health. The objective is to explore how developing physical literacy can support mental well-being throughout the lifespan. The research seeks to bring together innovative studies and insights, including, for example, programs that enhance children's confidence through movement, explorations of older adults' physical literacy in relation to cognitive health, and theoretical connections between sport science and psychology.
