About this Research Topic
Neuronal activity reflects the outcome of computations of an underlying complex system. For more than 150 years it has been known that neuronal activity is often proceeding rhythmically, with rhytmically coordinated activity being implicated for many cognitive functions. However, how does rhytmic activity subserve neuronal computations to ultimately reflect function? This Research Topic brings together scientists, who provide significant contributions about the potential computational roles of neuronal oscillatory activity. The Research Topic will cover computational approaches, which provide explicit layouts of circuit architectures and biophyscially plausible models of neuronal synchronization at local and large scale network levels. It likewise covers empirical studies and reviews about the origins and possible roles of particular rhythms - from slow delta and theta rhythms to fast gamma band rhythms - and discussing their involvement for a broad range of functions, including sensory perception, selective attention, decision making, action selection and motor programming.
