Complex cellular processes are regulated by spatiotemporal interactions of signaling molecules. Advances in fluorescent protein (FP) engineering and live-cell imaging techniques have made remarkable progress in the field of cell biology. For the real-time monitoring of molecular dynamics in space and time, genetically encoded biosensors based on FPs have been developed by various strategies, for example fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), reconstitution of split FP, pH sensitivity, maturation speed, and so on. These biosensors have been applied to investigate the underlying mechanisms of dynamic and complex cellular processes.

In this Research Topic, the latest advances in the FP engineering and fluorescent biosensors, and new imaging techniques and analysis methodology for the visualization of molecular dynamics in live cells can be presented. In addition, applications of FP-based biosensors in various cellular processes will be discussed.
