Bio-derived materials offer unprecedented versatility in molecular-level control for fine-tuning their properties both at the single-molecule and bulk scale. The design and engineering of bio-derived materials using proteins, sugars (including carbohydrates and that in DNA), and lipids as building blocks requires interdisciplinary approaches.

While the bulk properties of bio-derived materials depend on their molecular-level arrangements, the correlations remain elusive. Elucidation of these correlations requires a deep understanding of the self-assembly mechanisms of the building blocks at various length scales.

This Research Topic is based on Symposium L: Bioderived Materials of the International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies (ICMAT 2019 ). It aims to provide the readers with advances in the fundamental understanding of the self-assembly of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates during the formation of higher order supermolecular structures. It also includes the enabling technologies to study the behavior at molecular levels. The topics will span the design principles, from the translation of fundamental concepts, to their specific applications in health, electronic, food, and consumer cares. Specifically, we are aiming to understand the assembly processes of the three building blocks to form the hierarchical structures and the eventual supermolecular structures. Advances in computational methods that aid rational design as well as method development for characterization across various length scales are of special interest.

The Article Collection will accept original articles, mini reviews, and perspectives.
