Mexico has a long-standing research tradition in Statistical Physics and related topics. Research in Statistical Mechanics and Thermal Physics in the country dates back to the early 1960s. Development in the field led to the establishment of the so-called “Mexican school of Statistical Physics” during the late 1970s and up until the 1990s.
To this day, Statistical Physics forms a strong and lively community as evidenced by the fact that its flagship event, the Winter Meeting on Statistical Physics will celebrate its 50th annual edition during January 2021. On this occasion and given the wide scope of research in the area represented on these meetings: from deeply theoretical formulations of Mathematical Statistical Mechanics, Ergodic Theory and Nonlinear Dynamics, to detailed Computational Models and Simulations in Condensed and Soft Matter Physics, in Statistical Hydrodynamics and in Biophysics, to Network Science and Complexity Applications of the tenets and Methods of Statistical Physics thinking; we have considered pertinent to edit a research topic with some of the outstanding ideas and results presented in the 49th and 50th edition of the Winter Meeting on Statistical Physics.
The topics to be considered are those related to the formal structure and the broad range of Applications of Statistical Physics, going from the purely Mathematical to the Phenomenological, the Computational and Experimental approaches in the field. With applications in the Physical, Biological and Social Sciences.
