About this Research Topic
Innovations in genomics technology have driven the transformation of biology and agriculture into data-rich sciences. This technological advancement has been achieved through collaboration between industry and academics towards increasing data throughput and accuracy and has become practical by the concomitant decrease in costs. The data derived from different plant species has delivered insights into diverse varietal and germplasm resources and has helped to generate genotyping panels and a wealth of information on gene sequences.
While on the one hand, genomics technologies have been advancing rapidly, the corresponding advancements in phenotyping resources have created a bottleneck in crop improvement and breeding. Novel high-throughput approaches are needed to better understand the association between genotype and phenotype and to accelerate plant breeding. The tools and techniques being developed and evaluated confer considerable advantages over the conventional visual systems, including refinement of trait linkages and associations demonstrated in a number of recent studies.
This Research Topic aims to build upon those methodologies and strategies that are being used to understand the relevance of interactions between genotype and phenotype for crop improvement and precision agriculture.
