The use of intraoperative radiation therapy has evolved in time from treatment that required significant shielding and set up costs to a more accessible tool to aid in treatment of cancer. In volume I of this series, we presented the radiobiology and physics of how intraoperative radiotherapy provides therapeutic advantage in providing a large dose to a target while minimizing toxicity to normal surrounding tissues. We also provided a framework for how Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) has been used in various malignancies from head and neck cancer, breast cancer, pelvic cancers and for palliation.
While the previous volume of this collection demonstrated great success, in volume II we aim to present updates to the technology application, recent advances, and results of recent studies reporting IORT outcomes. We will also highlight future directions and ongoing clinical trials in different tumor sites.
