Despite greatly enhanced prevention and treatment methods for both conditions, heart disease and cancer remain the two leading causes of death in the United States. In the next 20 years, the number of cancer survivors in the United States is expected to increase to over 26 million. This is crucial to address, because cancer and cardiovascular disease share a number of common risk factors, and cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality in cancer survivors. Although the cardiovascular effects of cancer and cancer care are receiving more attention, little is known about successful methods and tools for preventing cardiovascular disease in these patients.

Furthermore, as we enter the Digital Era, with numerous institutions and areas of healthcare undergoing digital transformation, we cannot afford to fall behind. We need to create bridges among various types of innovation (such as Digital Health, mHealth, Telemedicine, Telehealth, Informatics, Precision Health, Precision Medicine, Computational Medicine, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Neural Networks, Social Media, and other technologies) to link our patients and their wellbeing with informatics-based opportunities to advance the prevention of cardiovascular toxicities from cancer treatments.

This Research Topic is presented in collaboration with the Cardiology Oncology Innovation Network (COIN). COIN has been conceived to create a network of individuals in cardiology, oncology, other areas of health care, industry, regulatory affairs, finance, and more. COIN is being developed as a consortium to focus on innovation, collaboration, and education in Cardiology and Oncology with emphases on the interface of the two (Cardio-Oncology), especially prevention.

The research topic provides simultaneous and ongoing publication in partnership with the COIN Summit 2021 held in December 2021, and produces reports on various collaborative projects from network members and colleagues, including applications of AI and informatics in Cardiology, Oncology, and especially Cardio-Oncology.

The Summit brings together a multi-stakeholder group from academia, technology, and industry with a shared interest in applying Innovation (Digital Health, mHealth, Telemedicine, Telehealth, Informatics, Precision Health, Computational Medicine, Social Media, Artificial Intelligence including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Neural Networks, & more) to Cardiology and Oncology clinical practice, research, and education.
