Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) are an important pathway for cellular communication, they play roles in a diversity of physiological and pathological conditions. They can transfer a great variety of molecules, as lipids, carbohydrates, protein, metabolites, and nuclei acids (RNA and DNA). By targeting these molecules to other cells, the EVs can affect and modulate the host's immune system that can lead to infection clearance or favor the pathogen and the disease development. Due to the capacity that the EVs present to transit easily in body fluids and being internalized by virtually any cell, they offer a great potential for therapeutic applications. EVs can be applied for tissue regeneration, cell-free stem cell-based therapy, diagnostics and they can be bioengineered for drug delivery and as vaccines.
Based on the biological features and physiological functions of the EVs, they are important cellular messengers that can provide relevant information on the mechanisms triggered by a pathological and/or altered condition. Understanding the signs has the potential to allow the development of the therapeutic use of EVs as delivery and diagnostics.
