Advances in Materials Toward Anti-Corrosion and Anti-Biofoulings

Corrosion and biofouling are difficult problems that are triggered by complex chemical and electrochemical interactions between materials and multiple environmental media. They affect various applications such as marine vessels, offshore platforms, coastal structures, chemical industries, military equipment, and aerospace. Corrosion and biofouling research is a multi-disciplinary field that includes surface and interfacial, materials science, electrochemistry, and microbial chemistry. A variety of strategies such as sacrificial anode, corrosion inhibitors, and protective coatings, have been reported to improve corrosion resistance and biofouling inhibition performance.

Although many exciting achievements in anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling materials have been accomplished in the past few decades, the development of multifunctional materials with enhanced resistance to corrosion and biofouling is still in its early stages. Many challenges remain for improving their applicability, long-term protective performance, wear/impact resistance as well as self-cleaning/self-healing properties, and for the reduction of their hazardous effects on the environment and health. Therefore, it is highly desirable to design and fabricate novel materials with high effectiveness, environmental compatibility, low cost, and long-term durability towards anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling applications.

Thus, this Research Topic aims to present the latest advances of novel materials for anti-corrosion and anti-biofouling applications, covering the mechanism, methodology, fabrication, new technologies, multifunctional integrated properties, etc. This is a multi-disciplinary area and thus high-quality Original Research, Review, Mini-review, and Perspective articles are all welcome for submission to this Research Topic. The themes to be covered in this Research Topic may include but not limited to the following:

-Corrosion and biofouling mechanisms of metallic materials

- Novel eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors

- Surface treatment and functionality

- Organic/Inorganic/Nanocomposite/Waterborne coatings

- Interfacial materials with special wettability (superhydrophobic, SLIPS etc.)

- Smart self-healing/reporting materials

- Anti-bacterial and anti-biofouling materials
