Coronaviruses are large, enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses. There are seven human coronaviruses which belong to Alphacoronavirus and Betacoronavirus. Both SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV have attracted global attention. COVID-19, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2, has posed a significant threat to global public health, and the differential diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infections from other human coronaviruses and common respiratory viral infections has become the focus of attention. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, a large number of molecular and non-molecular methods have been developed for the diagnosis and traceability of SARS-CoV-2, which has greatly contributed to the prevention and control of the pandemic. However, in many countries, there are still problems such as low detection efficiency, low sensitivity and poor specificity of detection methods.

This Research Topic will focus on the advances and progress in coronavirus identification and tracing methods, with emphasis on efficient and easy-to-use methods. The targets of these methods are usually nucleic acids, antigens, antibodies and so on. Their applications include but not limited to coronavirus identification, differential diagnosis and origin tracing. We would also like to bring discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of various methods in different application scenarios.

This Research Topic will gather Original Research, Reviews, Methods, Mini Review and Perspective focusing on coronavirus identification and tracing methods, and their applications.
