The incidence of obesity and its metabolic diseases diabetes mellitus is rising at an alarming rate. Moreover, obesity is a major risk factor in some chronic diseases, such as diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. However, no effective therapy has been developed for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. Novel food and food compounds interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity have attracted attention as a potential approach to address this health problem. The consumption of phenolic compounds, bioactive compounds in plant-based foods such as grain, legumes, fruits and vegetables, has been demonstrated to regulate metabolic pathways and the symptoms of obesity. Phenolic compounds and their possible mechanisms for the control of obesity and diabetes are welcome for inclusion in this Research Topic.
This Research Topic aims to summarize the progress made in our understanding of phenolics and food rich in phenolics on the anti-obesity potential and the regulation of pathways involved in the occurrence of obesity and related metabolic diseases.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
• The structure-activity relationship of phenolics on obesity and related chronic diseases
• Metabolomics views on gut microbiome of obesity and related chronic diseases modulated by phenolics or phenolics -rich foods
• The impact of different phenolics or food rich in phenolics on obesity and related chronic diseases as well as the underlying mechanism
• Other latest studies related to phenolics, and obesity related chronic diseases
Please note that manuscripts require a clear characterization of the phenols under study, i.e. with compound-specific identification and quantitation.
