The past few decades have seen big advances in the application of composite materials and composite structures, which have revolutionized traditional concepts and made new possibilities in civil engineering. With low-carbon and green environmental protection demands, engineering structures need to meet the needs of high sustainability index and NetZero-2050 deal, which has become one of the biggest challenges nowadays. This has been leading to the development of advanced materials (e.g., fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP), engineered cementitious composites (ECC)) and technologies (e.g., 3D scanning and printing, machine learning, digital twin) for structures, which achieve low carbon emissions, high durability, easy constructions, high resistances for the long term.
Research studies on such advanced materials and technologies for composite structures are very important for their development and applications. However, studies focusing on the high sustainability of composite structures are still relatively limited, especially the fundamental mechanisms, the scientific theory and methods, the effective analysis methods, and the promising applications. Therefore, there is a need for more research on this topic, which could develop plausible approaches for achieving high resistance, long service life and high durability, convenient construction, easy maintenance, and low CO2 emission of such structures.
The scope of this Research Topic focuses on advanced composite materials and technologies for sustainable structures. We welcome Original Research papers and Review papers on this Research Topic sharing the most recent ideas. The composite structures include but not limited to:
• Structures made of composite materials (e.g. FRP structures)
• Structures formed by several materials (e.g. reinforced concrete structures, FRP-strengthened existing structures, shape memory alloys (SMAs) embedded in concrete, composites or steel).
High sustainability includes:
• Low CO2 emission
• High resistance with environmental effect including high/low temperature, corrosion, fatigue loading etc.
• Long service life and high durability
• Easy construction and maintenance
