Intestinal barrier function is regulated through the brain-gut-microbiota axis that integrates distant and local regulatory networks through neuroendocrine, immune, and metabolic signaling pathways. Disturbance of the brain-gut-microbiota axis may induce intestinal barrier dysfunction that has been implicated in the origin and development of mucosal microinflammation. Sex hormones modulate both the intestinal barrier and the brain-gut-microbiota axis as well as stress responses through the autonomous nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, where corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is the main mediator of the neuroendocrine, autonomic, and behavioral responses to stress.
