The gut microbiome, as a complex and dynamic ecosystem in the human body, plays a considerable role in host health and disease. Dietary factors and trace elements intake can cause changes in microbial community composition, metabolism, and function. The dysregulation of gut microbiome is associated with the occurrence of many diseases, including diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension, COPD, and obesity. Bone and cartilage diseases, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, bone metastasis, osteonecrosis and Kashin-Beck disease, are etiologically believed to be the result of a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Many Studies have shown that the gut microbiota can be involved in bone and cartilage growth and development by the “cartilage-gut-microbiome axis”. Exploring the roles of diet, trace elements, and gut microbiota in bone and cartilage diseases will provide more clues to the etiology of such diseases and inspire new therapeutic targets.
This Research Topic mainly focuses on diet, trace elements and gut microbiota in the bone and cartilage diseases. The purpose is to explore whether trace elements and gut microbiota are involved in the pathogenesis of bone and cartilage diseases from the perspective of trace element content, and the composition, abundance, and metabolite changes of gut microbiota. And will further explore the feasibility of modifying dietary habits and gut microbiota as new therapeutic strategies for bone and cartilage diseases.
This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Brief Research Reports, Reviews, and Methods papers focused on the integration of different approaches to identify the diet, trace elements, and gut microbiota role in bone and cartilage diseases. These could include, but are not limited to:
• Identification of trace elements involved in the etiology and pathogenesis of bone and cartilage diseases
• Investigating the role of gut microbiome in bone and cartilage diseases to identify therapeutic targets
• Identification of dietary factors involved in the pathogenesis of bone and cartilage diseases by affecting trace elements intake and gut microbiota composition
