Cultural conflict has been a matter of increasing concern in Western democratic political systems for the last decade or so. However, such conflict has appeared to reach new levels of intensity in just the last few years.
Although the causes and consequences of such conflict vary from country to country, it seems clear that outwardly different issues constitute, at least to a great extent, a single dimension of conflict that expresses deep disagreements within society over fundamental civilizational values. These issues include immigration, as we have witnessed in the United States and Western Europe, controversies surrounding LGBTQ such as gay marriage and the rights of transgender students versus parental rights and deep conflicts over school curricula, the backlash seen in numerous countries to COVID policy during the COVID pandemic and even polarization over the current war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been exacerbated by the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas within the Gaza Strip.
We propose to examine different elements of those cultural struggles noted above but recognize that there may well be other topics of interest to potential contributors. We seek to utilize new and what are in our view innovative methodological approaches. Such methodologies include Natural Language Processing (NSP) models that allow for exploration of key narratives in social media, the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), agent-based or computational modeling and generative AI (Drus and Khalid, 2019; Torregrosa et. al, 2022). We anticipate recruiting both young and established scholars across a range of disciplines and multiple nationalities to examine these issues, with a special emphasis on recruitment of female scholars.
We believe this Research Topic will represent a measurable contribution to the study of domestic political conflict and will also serve as a basis for future research.
