Energy is the fundamental driving force for urban progress. With the further development of urban agglomeration, the connection between the energy system and various other systems has become closer. This connection is defined as energy-X nexus, where "X" can be water, land, hydrogen, climate, etc., or other systems that interact with the energy system. In this case, energy flows and material flows of this energy-X nexus become more and more complicated. Therefore, it is urgent to analyze the dynamic effects and coupling relationships of different systems from a new perspective. At the same time, urban energy management is facing the dual pressure of economic development and environmental protection, as well as being restricted or stimulated by energy policies. Thus, it is of great significance to explore the economic, technological, and political influences of related factors in achieving the development target for energy-X nexus.

In this Research Topic, we call for papers to discuss the profound implications of any energy-X nexus from a theoretical or practical perspective and answer how it affects sustainable urban energy development. It is also of great importance to provide reasonable and effective energy planning optimization methods to help determine the optimal structure of any energy-X nexus that meets various constraints, and effectively solve urban energy problems. In addition, we also wish to explore the economic, technological, and political influences of related factors in achieving the development target for urban energy development. This Research Topic is intended as a state-of-the-art resource for researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers interested in studying Urban Energy-X Nexus Optimization all over the world.
