Climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) is a key issue for sustainable development all over the world. Globally, most countries are working hard to reduce carbon emissions by energy policies reform. To achieve this goal, more attention should be paid to carbon emission-reducing policies. However, there is still a lot we must do to improve in terms of carbon emissions-reducing. Most importantly, in China, Chairman Xi announced that China will achieve “carbon neutral” status in 2060 at the Seventy-fifth United Nations General Assembly, which means the country must reduce carbon emission quickly and efficiently.

As the largest developing country, China is facing the dual constraints of economic development and environmental protection. On the one hand, China needs continuous development to improve the welfare of its residents. On the other hand, China's ecology and environment have been severely damaged. A more efficient energy system is needed for China to alleviate the conflict. Our concerns are how to maintain green and sustainable development through low-carbon energy systems. And the corresponding purpose of this Research Topic is to highlight excellent research which can help the Chinese government to improve energy efficiency, reduce GHGs and reform wider energy systems.
