Smart grid is a modern power grid with the characteristics of informatization, automation, and interaction, including power generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, consumption, and dispatching of power system. It usually covers all voltage levels and can realize a highly integrated integration of "power flow, information flow and business flow", upon which the perception ability of power systems could be greatly enhanced, meanwhile vast volume of data will become a basic characteristics of smart grid. With the advancement of smart grid, the access of large-scale renewable energy and novel equipment, while the power market reform have increased the complexity of the power grid and brought more uncertainties to power grid. Besides, modern power system has been closely coupled with the information system, natural gas system, and transportation system. The smart grid is based on integrated, high-speed bi-directional communication networks, and developing towards high integration of big data, Internet of things, and cloud computing in power grid. Thus, traditional modeling, optimization, and control might be inadequate to face such practical challenges brought by the comprehensive construction of smart grid due to their inherent limitations.

As the core driving force of present scientific and technological revolution, artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly changing the world. With the increasing scale of power system, its dynamic characteristics become more and more complex, and the contradiction between complexity and security becomes quite prominent. Thus, higher requirements are needed for system security and stability assessment, and AI can generally provide a promising solution for system stability assessment. The widely interconnected, highly intelligent, open, interactive, and sustainable smart grid supported by big data is the development trend of future energy and power industry. Hence, exploitation and implementation of various advanced AI based modelling, optimization, control, and planning techniques are extremely critical for an economic and efficient operation of the next generation of smart grid.
