Background:
Prostate cancer (PC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men living in developed countries. Most new patients are diagnosed early and successfully treated with surgery or radiotherapy; however, 10 to 20% of this population experience recurrence, thus needing systemic therapy. Recent advances in understanding the morphologic features and the molecular genetics of prostate cancer have provided insight and guidance to stratify this disease by genetic alterations and redefine treatments. Moreover, advances in screening technologies have resulted in the development of various tools to diagnose prostate cancer at an early stage and better treat the disease. Researchers have developed different tools to diagnose prostate cancer, and designed, based on these premises, several small molecule-based approaches to target different molecular drivers that cause this disease. Recent genetic and technological advances have provided insights into prostate cancer biology and have enabled the identification of novel drug targets to enable potent molecularly targeted therapeutics for this disease.
Goal:
The aim of this Research Topic is to review the recent advances in prostate cancer targets and the evolving therapeutic landscape for drug discovery, as well as to discuss their promise and associated challenges.
Scope:
Given the breadth of research in the field of prostate cancer diagnosis, treatments and development of potential new therapies, we encourage submissions that tackle the most recent advances in the field of prostate cancer.
