In the past decade, rapid development, and globalization has brought healthcare issues to the fore. To date, healthcare problems have become the most essential and challenging matters worldwide. Demands for fast, reliable, accurate, and low-cost detecting methods and devices in biomedical industries have been growing rapidly in recent years, particularly in the underdeveloped areas.

In the field of health monitoring, and diagnosis, the plasmonic-optical fiber sensors have shown extraordinary capabilities in realizing highly sensitive and accurate sensors for the measurement of biological analytes. These sensors offer a unique ability for real-time monitoring of the molecular binding events. Plasmonics, thanks to various alluring features and applications, is a highly dynamic field catering to multi-faceted research domains and naturally involves several researchers, scientists, and engineers from diversified areas. The unprecedented acceleration in the realization of plasmonic nanostructures, deposition of thin films, and development of highly sensitive optical characterization techniques have been mainly propelled by the advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology. The different approaches to nanostructuring metals have led to a wealth of interesting optical properties and functionality via manipulation of the plasmon modes that such structures support. The sensitivity of plasmonic structures to the changes in their local dielectric environment has led to the development of new sensing strategies and systems.

This Research Topic presents the most widely employed approaches to plasmonic-optical fiber sensors-based sensing and the numerous biomedical applications associated with it. It will cover the recent advances in various plasmonics sensing techniques, detection schemes, their realization, configuration, components employed, and application of sensors.
