Five Years of COVID-19 - Progress in Translational Research so far

It will soon be five years since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The unprecedented development of COVID-19 vaccines significantly reduced the cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections, allowed downgrading to epidemic status, and the return of society to pre-COVID conditions. However, emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants have affected vaccine efficacy and raised concerns of enhanced infectivity and pathogenicity. Prolonged presence of COVID symptoms have further extended the need of clinical research.

This Research Topic aims to review progress in all areas related to COVID-19 research from bench to bedside. The goal is to describe the successful development of vaccines, antiviral drugs and monoclonal antibodies so far, and how this know-how can be efficiently applied to emerging variants and beyond. Progress in the treatment of COVID-19 patients should also be included in this Research Topic.

Contribution of the following themes should be included in this Research Topic:

- Origin of SARS-CoV-2, what has changed since December 2020

- Updates on vaccine development, safety and adverse events in vaccinated individuals

- Emerging variants, infectivity and pathogenicity, re-engineering of vaccines

- Clinical aspects including long COVID, progress in treatment

- Epidemiology and preparedness for emerging epidemics/pandemics
