Background

The field of Bone Conduction Hearing Devices (BCHD) has undergone major technological advances in recent years. These include not only the hearing devices themselves, but also technologies and innovations that enhance the fitting process by improving quality of the intervention, providing objective device evaluations, or improving the integration between fitting and verification. These advances may apply to the subcategories of BCHD's including implantable devices and non-implantable devices, as well as to passive versus active technologies. Some advances may be aimed at improving intervention quality or feasibility with patients who cannot participate in a subjectively-driven fitting process, including but not limited to infants and young children.

Investigating the underlying theory, principles, evidence, and intervention mapping of innovations that aim to improve BCHD interventions is essential for developing innovations in this field. Developing better, more feasible, or more personalized strategies that address the hearing needs of BCHD users requires well-considered approaches that consider the needs of the patient, the technologies to be employed, and further development of the evidence base that underlies validated approaches. By continuing to build these, we can advance the field and build a pathway for implementation of new and better innovations.

This Research Topic aims to explore recent advances, innovations, and technologies in BCHD fitting that have been developed at any level of the intervention pathway, including hearing assessments that aid in fitting accuracy, better hearing devices and their outcomes, and technologies for device prescription, fitting, or evaluation. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances and state-of-the-art practices in these areas. To gather these insights, we welcome submission of any type of manuscript supported by this journal (including Brief Research Reports, Perspective, Mini-Review, Original Research, Systematic Review, etc.) in the following themes:

-advances in using outcomes to understand the interventions provided by BCHDs

-innovations in technologies for prescribing, fitting, or verifying BCHDs that are aimed at improving access to, and/or quality of, intervention

-intervention pathways for the provision of BCHDs

Articles accepted after peer review will be published and appear online as soon as approved for publication.
