Background
This Research Topic is the second volume of the Network Physiology: Insights into the Cardiovascular System collection. Other titles in the Insights in Frontiers in Network Physiology series can be found here.
Network Physiology, particularly within the cardiovascular system, has seen remarkable advancements in recent years. This field explores the complex interactions and regulatory mechanisms that govern cardiovascular function, integrating insights from physiology, systems biology, nonlinear dynamics and network theory. Despite significant progress, several critical questions remain unanswered, such as the precise mechanisms underlying cardiovascular regulation, causes and dynamic features of arrthythmias, and the interplay between different physiological networks. Recent studies have provided valuable data on the dynamic behavior of cardiovascular networks, revealing intricate patterns of self-organisation, connectivity and interdependence. However, there is still a need for more comprehensive models and experimental approaches to fully understand these complex systems in order to treat lifethreatening arrhythmias, heart failure and other diseases. Addressing these gaps is therefore crucial for developing better diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies for cardiovascular diseases.
This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in the field of Network Physiology with a focus on the cardiovascular system. The main objectives are to highlight recent discoveries, identify ongoing challenges, and propose future directions for research. Specific questions to be addressed include the identification of key regulatory nodes within cardiovascular networks, the impact of external stressors on network dynamics, the development of predictive models for cardiovascular health and disease and novel approaches for prenetion and therapies.
