Background

Following the great success of Volume I of the research topic: "SARS-CoV-2: Virology, Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Pathogenesis and Control", we are pleased to launch the 2nd volume of this topic.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), emerged in late December 2019 and quickly escalated into a global health crisis. This highly transmissible and virulent virus significantly impacted public health systems and disrupted daily life. As a result, there has been a concerted effort by the scientific community and public health authorities worldwide to enhance our understanding and management of the disease. Researchers have focused on developing strategies to control the virus's spread, which has led to rapid advancements in our knowledge of both the virus and the associated disease.

Two years after the launch of our first collection, this Research Topic aims to continue the effort in understanding SARS-CoV-2 and managing COVID-19 by encouraging the submission of high-quality research that addresses existing knowledge gaps. Specifically, we seek to deepen our understanding of the virus's biology and contribute to the development of more effective interventions.

To effectively cover the complex nature of SARS-CoV-2 and its impact, we are focusing on a range of critical aspects of the virus and its interaction with humans. Submissions are invited to explore diverse topics, including but not limited to:

• Epidemiology and genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2;
• Host genetic markers of susceptibility and resistance to infection;
• The immune response to SARS-CoV-2 and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines;
• Development of various models for studying the virus (in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo, and alternatives);
• Mechanisms of virus replication and host-virus interactions;
• Transmission and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2;
• Novel diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2 and emerging variants.
• Safety alongside the effectiveness of vaccines
• Implementation and evaluation of control interventions
