Background

Understanding the regulation of photosynthesis through redox states forms a critical area of research. The complexity of electron flow, whether through linear or cyclic pathways, is modulated by these redox states, yet specifics of this interaction remain poorly defined. Recent studies are starting to uncover aspects of this complexity, including the role of the plastoquinone redox state and the interaction between redox signals and photosynthetic pathways. This emerging field is key to improving the efficiency of photosynthesis in plants and algae.

This Research Topic aims to thoroughly investigate the molecular relationships between redox signals, light quality and quantity, and the genetic regulation within chloroplasts and cyanobacteria. Key objectives include delineating how these components interact to control photosynthetic efficiency, testing hypotheses related to gene expression modulation by redox changes, and establishing a clearer model of photosynthetic regulation mechanisms.

To gather further insights into these regulatory processes, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

o Mechanisms of redox influence on electron partitioning in photosynthesis

o Role of light quality in regulating chloroplast gene expression

o Photosynthetic redox control of nuclear gene expression

o Genetic modifications to optimize photosynthetic pathways

o Implications of enhanced photosynthesis for energy sustainability and climate mitigation

This comprehensive approach will help clarify the control mechanisms underlying photosynthetic efficiency, bridging fundamental biology and practical applications in sustainability and climate response.

We welcome submissions of the following article types: Brief Research Report, Data Report, General Commentary, Hypothesis & Theory, Methods, Mini Review, Opinion, Original Research, Perspective, Review, Systematic Review.
