Background

Climate change and natural hazards are key players impacting the design, performance, and resilience of civil infrastructure systems. Numerous natural and human activities, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, coastal erosion, and seismic activities, pose significant challenges to the stability and durability of civil infrastructures. Green solutions are essential to mitigate these risks, adapt to changing environmental conditions, and enhance infrastructure resiliency, as well as lower greenhouse gas emissions. The transition toward sustainable civil infrastructure systems is the top priority for civil engineers and researchers to address global environmental challenges and ensure the long-term resilience of civil infrastructures. Geotechnical engineers play a pivotal role in developing sustainable solutions for civil infrastructure systems, such as sustainable ground improvement, the use of recycled materials, energy-efficient soil stabilization, innovative foundations, and nature-based solutions.

This research topic seeks high-quality original research, reviews, and case studies that highlight advances in geotechnical engineering for sustainable civil infrastructures. We aim to bridge the gap between research, innovation, and real-world applications while fostering the development of eco-friendly, resilient, and cost-effective geotechnical solutions.

Research Themes of Interest (Include but are not limited to):

• Sustainable ground improvement techniques (e.g., biochar-amended soils, soil mixing and stabilization, geosynthetics, bio-inspired or bioengineering solutions)
• Use of recycled and waste materials in geotechnical applications
• Geotechnical aspects of nature-based and living shoreline solutions
• Soil-structure interaction for resilient infrastructure
• Performance-based design for climate-adaptive infrastructure
• Smart geotechnical monitoring and digital twin applications
• Carbon footprint reduction in geotechnical practices
• Life cycle assessment for geotechnical solutions
• Case studies of sustainable geotechnical infrastructure projects
