Background

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) is rapidly transforming construction management by enabling smarter, more sustainable project delivery. Recent technological advances—particularly in AI, sensing, and data analytics—are expanding BIM’s capabilities in areas such as real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and resource optimization. As the construction industry adapts to Industry 4.0, the convergence of AI and BIM has emerged as a key enabler of digital transformation, enhancing efficiency, collaboration, and environmental performance across the project lifecycle.

This Research Topic aims to accelerate the adoption of digital technologies in the construction sector, focusing on the integration of AI with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the broader suite of Big9 technologies—AI, drones, IoT, cloud computing, big data, sensing, wearables, robotics, and extended realities (VR/AR/MR/xR). These innovations offer transformative potential in areas like automated design, construction monitoring, resource efficiency, and safety management. Despite the promise, challenges remain in implementation, interoperability, and ethical use. By collecting cutting-edge research on AI-BIM integration and its implications for sustainable and digital construction, this themed issue will provide a roadmap for embracing Industry 4.0 and transitioning toward a more adaptive, efficient, and environmentally responsible construction industry.

We invite original research articles and state-of-the-art reviews on AI-BIM integration and other advanced digital technologies in the construction industry. This Special Issue aims to bring together contributions from a diverse range of professionals, including academics, construction managers, civil engineers, project managers, urban governance teams, city and regional planners, real estate and property managers, architects, IT managers, data scientists, software developers, computer systems analysts, web developers, governance and policy specialists, and related experts.
