Background

The pancreas is a multifunctional organ whose exocrine and endocrine compartments work in concert to sustain metabolic and digestive homeostasis. While these systems have often been studied in isolation, mounting evidence points to their deep interdependence, regulated through a complex network of ion transport, calcium signaling, and genetic determinants. Perturbations in these pathways contribute to the development and progression of a broad range of diseases, including acute and chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus, and pancreatic cancer.

This Research Topic aims to bring together multidisciplinary research exploring:

• Ion channels and transporters in pancreatic secretion and signaling
• Calcium dynamics in acinar and islet cells
• Functional crosstalk between endocrine and exocrine compartments
• Organelle communication in stress responses (ER, mitochondria, lysosomes)
• Genetic variants and inherited disorders affecting pancreatic function
• Systems-level and personalized medicine approaches to pancreatic diseases

We welcome original research, reviews, and perspectives from the fields of physiology, molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology, and translational research. Studies utilizing cutting-edge tools—such as live-cell imaging, electrophysiology, organoids, single-cell technologies, omics approaches, and in vivo models—are especially encouraged.
