Background

The retina is essential for visual function, and disruptions in its physiological balance can lead to severe visual impairments. Disorders like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), and optic neuritis (ON) affect millions of individuals worldwide, posing significant challenges to global health systems. Recent research has highlighted the significant role of redox signaling pathways in the pathophysiology of these conditions. A refined understanding of these mechanisms is a fundamental requisite for identifying new biomarkers and therapeutic targets that could lead to groundbreaking treatments.

This Research Topic aims to explore the intricate redox balance in the retina and investigate how impairments in this system contribute to disease. We are particularly focused on how oxidative stress and redox signaling impact the development and progression of retinal diseases, seeking novel insights that could translate into clinical innovations.

To gather further insights into redox processes and their implications in retinal disorders, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- The role of redox homeostasis in the retinal physiology.

- Development of innovative biomarkers for retinal health monitoring.

- Pharmacological targets in the treatment of retinal diseases - based on redox balance.

- Oxidative stress as a pathophysiological factor in conditions like AMD and DR.

- Pathomechanisms in neurodegenerative optic neuropathies, including glaucoma and ON.

We encourage the submission of original research papers and review articles that add to our understanding of these critical areas.
