Aging is a significant field of study, given its status as the predominant risk factor for numerous chronic diseases. Traditionally, the onset of these diseases has been largely attributed to the cumulative damage over time. However, an emerging hypothesis suggests that a crucial factor might be the gradual decline in the body's capacity to maintain homeostasis. Biological resilience—the ability to recover from challenges and to restore equilibrium—is increasingly considered a pivotal, yet underexplored, determinant of healthy aging. Impaired resilience has been closely linked to chronic diseases and heightened morbidity, whereas maintained resilience is associated with greater longevity and improved healthspan. Despite its potential significance, many questions remain about the role of biological resilience within aging research, presenting a rich field for exploration.
This Research Topic aims to delve into the fundamental questions concerning the role and utility of biological resilience in aging research. Specifically, it seeks to examine the hypotheses surrounding the standardization of resilience testing, whether resilience decline due to aging is domain-specific or more global, the sensitivity of resilience to aging interventions, and the possibility of actively enhancing resilience akin to boosting immunity. Through these investigations, the aim is to advance our understanding of biological resilience as a critical component of aging biology and foster new insights into promoting healthier aging.
To gather further insights into the determinants and implications of biological resilience in aging, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
