Background

The developing brain is highly susceptible to the effects of substance use, making it particularly vulnerable during the early stages of life. Recognizing the specific impacts that substance use can have during this critical period is important for the promotion of brain health and preventing long-term consequences. This article collection aims to delve deeply into the intricate relationship between substance use and the developing brain, shedding light on the complex neurological, cognitive, and behavioral consequences that arise.

Key areas of interest include:

• Neurological, neurochemical, cellular, and brain circuitry changes induced by substances during critical stages of brain development.

• Long-term cognitive, neuropsychological, behavioral, emotional, and functional consequences of early substance use.

• Effects of different types of substances (e.g., alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, opioids, stimulants, hallucinogens) on brain structure and function in fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.

• Identification and evaluation of risk factors associated with early substance use and their impacts on brain health.

• Exploration of prevention strategies and interventions aimed at mitigating the negative effects of substance use on young brains.

This collection welcomes original research articles, reviews, and opinion papers fostering a comprehensive understanding of the complex interactions between substance use and early brain development.
