Urban heritage, including historic architecture, cultural landscapes, and intangible construction traditions anchors urban identity and collective memory. While prominent historic districts often benefit from protections, awards, and regulations, many lesser-known urban heritage areas face mounting risks amid rapid urbanization, climate change, socio-economic pressures, and technological disruption. There is an urgent need to strategically leverage innovative and scalable technologies to safeguard and revitalize urban heritage for social, cultural, and economic sustainability.
Rationale and Gap Despite a growing literature on cultural heritage, research that fully integrates scientific, technological, and urban design perspectives remains limited.
This gap constrains our ability to:
o Systematically document and analyze heritage assets using advanced tools.
o Evaluate the relevance and transferability of historic urban design principles to contemporary challenges.
o Preserve and transmit technical knowledge embedded in heritage structures, materials, and urban forms.
Emerging technologies such as AI-driven analysis, 3D scanning, digital twins, remote sensing, advanced diagnostics, and materials science offer unprecedented opportunities. Yet applications are often fragmented, under-theorized, or disconnected from policy, governance, and community engagement.
Aim and Scope This Research Topic seeks to bridge disciplinary divides by convening heritage scholars, urban planners, engineers, conservation scientists, materials researchers, data scientists, and technologists. We aim to advance evidence-based, scalable, and ethically grounded approaches to urban heritage preservation, adaptive reuse, and climate resilience.
We welcome original research articles, case studies, methodological papers, and critical reviews on (but not limited to) the following themes:
