Neuropsychiatric disorders represent a significant and growing global health burden, characterized by complex pathologies and diverse clinical presentations that impact millions worldwide. Traditional diagnostic methods often rely on subjective clinical assessments, while conventional therapeutic approaches can face challenges in patient engagement, personalization, and accessibility, leading to suboptimal outcomes for many individuals. However, the rapid advancement of digital and computational technologies offers unprecedented opportunities to revolutionize the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of these conditions. Among these innovations, Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a particularly promising tool, capable of creating immersive and controlled environments for both research and clinical application, yet it is just one facet of a broader technological revolution reshaping mental health.
This Research Topic aims to address the critical need for more precise, engaging, and accessible interventions for neuropsychiatric disorders by exploring the transformative potential of a wide array of technological innovations. Despite growing interest, the full integration and evidence-based application of cutting-edge technologies remain nascent. We seek to present a comprehensive collection of research that showcases how various technologies can bridge existing gaps in care, from early detection and objective assessment to personalized therapeutic strategies and continuous monitoring. Our objective is to advance the scientific understanding and practical application of these tools, ultimately leading to improved diagnostic accuracy, enhanced therapeutic efficacy, and more personalized patient care. By compiling studies on novel technological approaches, we hope to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate the translation of these innovations into routine clinical practice, enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
This Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews, case studies, and perspective articles focusing on the development, application, and evaluation of technological innovations in the context of neuropsychiatric disorders. We encourage submissions that explore not only the efficacy but also the feasibility, user experience, ethical implications, and implementation challenges of these tools.
Specific themes include, but are not limited to:
- Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) for assessment, intervention, rehabilitation, and training in neuropsychiatric conditions.
- Wearable sensors, mobile health (mHealth) applications, and digital phenotyping for continuous monitoring, early detection, and passive data collection.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for diagnostic prediction, personalized treatment pathways, and analysis of complex neuropsychiatric data.
- Brain-computer interfaces (BCI), neurofeedback, and other neuromodulation techniques.
- Gamification, serious games, and interactive digital platforms for therapeutic engagement and cognitive rehabilitation.
- Telemedicine, telepsychiatry, and remote care delivery models leveraging digital tools for accessibility and scalability.
- Ethical considerations, patient safety, data privacy, and regulatory frameworks pertinent to new technologies in mental health.
- Studies involving a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, dementia, and PTSD.
Keywords: Virtual Reality, Neuropsychiatric, Augmented Reality, AI, Machine Learning
