Effects of A study of the outcomes of a Nursing Iintervention based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour in on Visual Function, Blood Sugar Levels, and Quality of Life in Perioperative Patients with Diabetic Retinopathy Patients

Objective: To evaluate the effects of nursing intervention based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) on perioperative patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods: A total of 120 DR patients admitted from January 2021 to January 2024 were randomly assigned to an intervention group (TPB-based nursing) or a control group (conventional nursing). Visual function, glycemic indicators, incidence of adverse events, self-management ability, and quality of life were assessed. Paired t-tests and independent t-tests were applied as appropriate. Results: After 2 months, the intervention group showed greater improvements in visual function than the control group, with greater reductions in peripheral vision score (−5.81 vs. −1.51; P<0.001), sensory adaptation score (−9.20 vs. −5.20; P<0.001), and daily activity restriction score (−9.06 vs. −5.04; P<0.001). Glycemic outcomes also improved more significantly, including fasting blood glucose (−3.07 vs. −1.00 mmol/L; P<0.001), 2 h postprandial blood glucose (−4.22 vs. −2.19 mmol/L; P<0.001), and glycosylated hemoglobin (−3.78% vs. −1.76%; P<0.001). In addition, the intervention group had fewer adverse events and better improvement in self-management and quality of life (all P<0.001). Conclusion: TPB-based nursing intervention effectively enhanced visual function recovery, glycemic control, self-management ability, and overall outcomes in perioperative DR patients, supporting its clinical applicability.
