Background

Aging is an inevitable biological process characterized by progressive cellular changes that lead to senescence and death. Despite its inevitability, current research has increasingly focused on interventions that might not just delay the process but enhance youthfulness and extend lifespan through various means, including pharmacological agents and dietary supplements. Many natural compounds have shown potential in slowing aging, sourced from diverse origins like marine organisms, microorganisms, and a broad array of herbs and plants, some of which have historical roots in traditional Oriental medicine.

This Research Topic aims to delve into various nutritional interventions that can slow the aging process, promote a healthier old age, and decrease incidences of age-related diseases. It seeks to uncover how specific nutrients, dietary patterns, and lifestyle choices influence aspects of aging such as cellular senescence, oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial health. The primary goal is to pinpoint effective nutritional strategies that bolster overall health and extend both health span and lifespan in elderly populations, encompassing the effects of anti-aging foods, plant-based diets, phytochemicals, antioxidants, as well as probiotics and prebiotics.

To gather further insights in this broad and impactful field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

Impact of personalized nutrition on aging.
Dietary component effects on aging mechanisms like oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular senescence.
Nutritional roles in promoting healthy aging and preventing age-related diseases.
Interaction between nutrition and other lifestyle factors (e.g., physical activity, stress management, sleep, social engagement) for optimizing health outcomes and promoting successful aging.
Recent advancements and innovation in nutritional science, including nutraceuticals, functional foods, dietary supplements, and new dietary approaches such as intermittent fasting and calorie restriction to enhance healthy aging and extend lifespan.
