About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Submission Deadline 25 March 2026

  2. This Research Topic is currently accepting articles.

Background

Addiction, particularly substance addiction, undermines the normal function and structure of the brain, initiating changes that result in dependency. Understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of addiction is becoming more crucial in current research. This is particularly true with the advancements in neuromodulation therapies, which have shown promise in treating addiction.

Our aim with this Research Topic is to provide a comprehensive examination of the evolving field of neuroplastic changes associated with addiction and how advancements in neuromodulation could revolutionize its treatment. By collating a robust body of research, we can stimulate discourse on the utility of these interventions and its impact on neuroplasticity thereby proposing novel approaches and strategies in the treatment of addiction.

We encourage submissions from researchers, clinicians, and experts in the fields of neuroscience, addiction therapy, and neurosurgery who can contribute meaningful insights to this discourse. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews, and method articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:

• Neural mechanisms underlying addiction.

• The role of neuroplasticity in addiction.

• Evaluating the therapeutic effects of neuromodulation in the treatment of addiction.

• Case studies of neuromodulation application for addiction treatment.

• Future trends in the integration of neuromodulation and addiction treatment.
