Frailty is a complex clinical syndrome marked by heightened vulnerability and reduced physiological reserve, greatly affecting healthy life expectancy and global healthcare systems. As the world's population ages, maintaining health, well-being, and autonomy has become crucial. Current research has thoroughly documented the impact of frailty on the elderly, yet the transitional phase from robustness to pre-frailty requires further exploration. Identifying early signs of pre-frailty allows for targeted preventive measures, potentially shifting the course of functional decline. This emphasizes a crucial shift towards proactive strategies in addressing age-related vulnerabilities, rather than the reactive management traditionally seen.
This Research Topic aims to enhance our understanding of the intricate link between frailty and healthy ageing. We seek to explore comprehensive approaches that go beyond merely treating clinical symptoms of frailty. This includes fostering overall well-being and independence among the elderly. There is a vital need to redefine frailty to encapsulate the diverse experiences of ageing across different populations and settings. This broadened approach aims to create more effective interventions that not only support healthy ageing but also mitigate the risks and impacts associated with frailty.
To gather further insights in this expanding field, we welcome contributions from various article types, including original research articles, reviews and commentaries. We are particularly interested in articles focusing on, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Novel assessment tools for early identification of frailty risk factors • Integration of digital health technologies in frailty prevention and management • Social determinants of healthy ageing and their impact on frailty trajectories • Interventional studies that aim to reverse or prevent frailty • The role of nutrition and physical activity in maintaining function and preventing age-related decline • Biological mechanisms facilitating healthy ageing • Lifestyle interventions promoting long-term health and wellness in the elderly
