Background

The construction industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions and is increasingly subject to intense environmental scrutiny. As the demand for green principles and low-carbon solutions becomes a worldwide imperative, significant attention has turned toward the decarbonization of building materials.

Advances in this area include the utilization of industrial waste for resource production, the replacement of traditional cement with low-carbon alternatives, and the adoption of carbon storage techniques. While some of these innovations have demonstrated effectiveness in industrial applications, many remain in the research phase, underscoring the need for a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of their mechanisms, efficiency, and environmental impacts.

Moreover, evaluating the long-term performance of low-carbon materials remains a crucial challenge that can limit their widespread adoption.

This Research Topic seeks to accelerate the development and industrialization of decarbonization technologies for building materials. We aim to showcase recent advancements and trends in the mechanisms of low-carbon solutions, the workability and durability of green building materials, and the assessment of their energy efficiency and carbon reduction potential.

We invite original research, reviews, and case studies exploring, but not limited to, the following themes:

o Workability and durability of low-carbon building materials
o Development and application of innovative decarbonization techniques, such as carbon mineralisation of waste concrete
o Efficiency of carbon reduction during the production of low-carbon building materials
o Energy consumption and environmental impact assessments of decarbonization technologies in construction materials

Through this Research Topic, we aim to propel both the scientific understanding and the practical implementation of decarbonization strategies in construction, contributing to a more sustainable built environment.
