The field of neuroprotection is rapidly advancing, with bioactive compounds emerging as central components in the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Bioactive compounds are naturally-occurring chemical substances found in plants, animals, and microorganisms that have significant effects on living tissues. They act on neuroprotection by modulating signalling pathways, reducing oxidative stress, and combating inflammation, thereby preserving neuronal function and integrity. These compounds are particularly valuable in addressing the neurological impacts of aging, contributing to the preservation of cognitive and motor functions over time. In the context of aging, bioactive compounds may act as protectors by specifically targeting mechanisms such as oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, which are critical contributors to age-related neuronal decline.
This Research Topic aims to gather comprehensive insights into the role of bioactive compounds in neuroprotection in the context of aging. We invite submissions that investigate the identification, mode of action, and therapeutic potential of bioactive compounds in the context of age-related neurological decline. Studies investigating the integration of these compounds into clinical practice, their effect with existing treatments, and novel delivery technologies are also encouraged. Relevant themes include, but are not limited to:
• Insights into how bioactive compounds act in neuroprotection during aging.
• Discovery and characterization of new bioactive compounds with neuroprotective potential.
• Application of bioactive compounds in the prevention and treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
• Mechanisms by which bioactive compounds mitigate oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in aging.
• Innovations in enhancing the delivery and bioavailability of bioactive compounds.
• Comparative studies of bioactive compounds from natural and synthetic origins.
Through this Research Topic, we aim to investigate the potential of bioactive compounds in advancing neurotherapeutic strategies for aging, bridging the gap from discovery to real-world clinical use.
