Background

Insect pests are causing severe damage to the growth and production of crops worldwide. Insect resistance monitoring and management are essential components of integrated pest management. In order to achieve early detection of emergent resistance, resistance monitoring involves tracking insect populations to identify shifts in insecticide susceptibility. This proactive strategy enables prompt developments in pest control strategies. Deploying biological control agents like entomopathogens and cultivation of crops expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins, rotating insecticides with different modes of action and implementing cultural practices are the most common modes of insect pest management. The rapid evolution of insect resistance to Bt proteins and insecticides poses a substantial threat to cultivated crops. Monitoring the status of insect resistance in the field population is the first step toward determining the efficacy of pesticides used and current management strategies. Regular monitoring of the field population helps in assessing the risk associated with insect resistance. Remarkable progress in genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics helps study the genetic basis of insect resistance, which will help delay the evolution of field resistance and the improvement of management strategies. This research topic aims to collect recent works on the status of insect resistance and advances in insect pest monitoring and control strategies that are suitable for sustainable agriculture.
