Background

We are now entering the third decade of the 21st Century, and, especially in recent years, the achievements made by scientists have been exceptional, leading to major advancements in the fast-growing field of genetics.

Frontiers in Genetics has organized a series of Research Topics to highlight the latest advancements across genetics, with contributions from members of our accomplished Editorial Boards. This editorial initiative—of particular relevance to the community—is led by Prof. Blanka Rogina, Specialty Chief Editor of the Genetics of Aging section, together with Dr. Heidi A Tissenbaum. This Research Topic is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field of Genetics of Aging.

The Research Topic invites brief, forward-looking contributions from Editorial Board members describing the state of the art, outlining recent developments and major accomplishments that have been achieved, as well as those that need to occur to move the field forward. Authors are encouraged to identify the greatest challenges in the sub-disciplines, and discuss potential solutions.

We are seeking articles that address:
• Epigenetics in aging
• Genetic regulation of lifespan and healthspan
• Gene-environment interactions in aging
• Cellular senescence and genetic factors
• New genomics and gene-editing technologies in aging research
• Genetics of age-related diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, cancer, Parkinson’s)
• Comparative and evolutionary genetics of aging
• Integrative and systems biology approaches
• Genetic-based therapeutic strategies for healthy aging

The goal of this special edition is to shed light on the progress made in the past decade in Genetics of Aging, and to explore the future challenges ahead, providing a thorough overview of the field. This article collection aims to inspire, inform, and guide researchers in Genetics of Aging.
