Facial Nerve Disease and its Impact on the Eye: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

Facial nerve disease, particularly facial paralysis, greatly affects facial expression and eye function, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Currently, the field explores facial nerve disease in its many facets—from paralysis to synkinesis—highlighting the need to better understand the illness's pathogenesis and develop effective treatments. While substantial progress has been made, significant gaps remain around the full psychological impacts and efficient management strategies, which require continuous exploration. Recent studies have pushed forward our knowledge, revealing enhanced outcomes through advancements in facial neuromuscular rehabilitation, surgical reanimation, selective neurolysis, and ocular surface disease management.

This Research Topic aims to deepen the understanding of facial nerve disease, focusing on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment methods. The objectives encompass evaluating surgical innovations and medical treatments, refining quality-of-life assessments, and exploring psychological aspects, all to improve patient care.
