Background

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and exosomes are crucial components of intercellular communication, facilitating the transport of bioactive molecules like proteins, microRNAs, and phospholipids. Emerging research highlights their therapeutic potential across a spectrum of diseases, including neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, and metabolic disorders. Due to their nanoscale size and versatile nature, EVs and exosomes can be engineered to deliver specific therapeutic agents, such as microRNA mimics or inhibitors. Recent studies demonstrate their promising role in disease treatment, especially when administered intravenously or intranasally, offering a non-invasive approach for targeting brain diseases. As animal studies continue to reveal the efficacy of these vesicles in therapeutic applications, the foundation for clinical translation is being robustly established.

This Research Topic aims to consolidate investigations that delve into the therapeutic applications of extracellular vesicles and exosomes using animal models. The focus will be on elucidating the mechanistic processes involved and assessing therapeutic effectiveness to uncover new molecular targets. The objective is to foster the development of innovative strategies that ensure efficacious and well-tolerated treatments for various health conditions.
The research scope is directed towards exploring the applications of EVs and exosomes in both in vivo and in vitro settings for prevalent diseases, highlighting their sourcing, engineering, delivery, and functional impacts.

We encourage submissions that encompass original research, reviews, and perspective articles in the following themes:
o Applications of EVs and exosomes in brain injury, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, and metabolic disorders
o Methods for extracting and sourcing EVs and exosomes from various tissues
o Advanced engineering approaches to customize EV and exosome therapeutic payloads
o Innovations in delivery mechanisms for targeted disease treatment
o Evaluation of functional outcomes and therapeutic efficacy in disease contexts

We welcome various article types, including original research, reviews, and perspectives.
