Background

The landscape of human health is undergoing profound transformation, shaped by demographic shifts, environmental challenges, and rapid technological advancements. Neuroscience stands at a critical juncture where traditional models must evolve to embrace the growing complexity and diversity of human brain health. Population neuroimaging—a field bridging neuroimaging and population science—offers a powerful framework to address this challenge by enabling large-scale studies that account for biological, environmental, and sociocultural variability across diverse populations. With rising global migration, changing disease trajectories, and longer lifespans, traditional assumptions about age, geography, and phenotype are becoming less reliable. Meanwhile, environmental stressors like climate change and shifting cultural norms further complicate brain health outcomes. Advances in imaging technology, including higher resolution and more accessible, non-invasive methods, are expanding our ability to capture this diversity. Embracing population neuroimaging is thus both an ethical imperative and a scientific opportunity to uncover insights that reflect the full spectrum of human brain variation.

This article collection aims to catalyze a new wave of research that embraces human heterogeneity as a central tenet of population neuroimaging. Rather than treating variability as statistical noise, we invite contributions that recognize it as a source of innovation and discovery. The goal is to explore how population neuroimaging can reveal the emerging dimensions of brain health shaped by demographic evolution, novel phenotypes, and environmental complexity. We seek to bring together interdisciplinary work that leverages both technological innovations—such as high-resolution imaging and non-invasive data collection—and conceptual advances in how we interpret age, sex, culture, and environmental influences in the brain. By fostering dialogue among neuroscientists and epidemiologists we aim to establish population neuroimaging as a transformative lens through which to understand and improve brain health on a global scale.

This collection invites original research, reviews, methodological advances, brief research reports, and perspective pieces that engage with the central themes of diversity and complexity in population neuroimaging. We are particularly interested in contributions that investigate neuroimaging across global populations, and in work that embraces methodological innovation to better capture and interpret human heterogeneity. Submissions may explore the influence of environmental, sociocultural, and biological factors on brain health, or examine how shifting demographic realities—such as aging, migration, and climate change—are redefining neurological phenotypes. Authors are encouraged to adopt interdisciplinary perspectives and to articulate clearly the characteristics of the populations studied, the methodological frameworks employed, and the broader implications of their findings. This collection aims to chart a path toward a more inclusive, responsive, and scientifically robust future for neuroscience.
