Background

The exploration and application of bioactive compounds in the field of animal production have shown promising potential in recent years. Agricultural by-products are rich reservoirs of bioactive compounds, including fibers, lipids, polysaccharides, bioactive peptides, polyphenols, and more. These compounds exhibit biological functionalities that can be harnessed as functional food or feed additives. Thanks to advancements in technology, these bioactive compounds can contribute significantly to the sustainable development of global animal production by influencing factors such as growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune function, gut microbiome, and metabolome in livestock. Despite their potential, a more thorough examination and understanding are needed to unlock their full benefits.

This Research Topic aims to deepen our understanding of the natural bioactive compounds derived from agricultural by-products, with a focus on their characteristics and the molecular mechanisms by which they influence livestock production. By deciphering the tripartite relationship among bioactive compounds, the gut microbiome, and metabolome using cutting-edge omics techniques, we can better grasp how these interactions can improve the productivity and health of animals. Addressing these objectives will not only enhance livestock production but also contribute to sustainable agricultural practices globally.

To gather further insights within the scope of bioactive compounds in livestock production, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Characterization of bioactive compounds in agricultural by-products
• Mechanistic studies on bioactive compounds' effects on the gut microbiome
• Omics approaches to understand bioactive compound interactions in metabolomics
• Impacts of dietary bioactive compounds on animal immune function and growth
• Sustainable use of agricultural by-products for animal feed
• Innovations in extracting and utilizing bioactive compounds for animal health
