Nervous system disorders, including neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and neuropsychiatric diseases, represent a significant global health challenge, affecting millions of individuals and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Despite advances in neuroscience and molecular biology, early and accurate diagnosis remains difficult due to disease heterogeneity and overlapping clinical manifestations. Biomarkers hold great promise for improving the diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and therapeutic strategy of these disorders. However, the identification and clinical translation of reliable biomarkers remain limited, highlighting the urgent need for innovative research in this field.
This Research Topic aims to accelerate the discovery and development of robust biomarkers for nervous system disorders, with an emphasis on both diagnostic and therapeutic applications. We seek to foster interdisciplinary research that integrates molecular, cellular, and computational approaches to identify novel biomarkers from various sources, such as biofluids, imaging, and genetic data. Additionally, we encourage studies exploring the role of biomarkers in predicting disease onset, progression, and response to treatment, as well as their potential as therapeutic targets. By bringing together cutting-edge research and expert perspectives, this Topic aspires to advance our understanding of the molecular underpinnings of nervous system disorders and pave the way for personalized medicine strategies.
We invite submissions that address the discovery, validation, and clinical application of biomarkers in nervous system disorders in the format of original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, systematic reviews, methods, and perspectives. Submissions from multidisciplinary teams, especially those bridging neuroscience, genomics, proteomics, pharmacology, and clinical research, are highly encouraged. Authors are expected to provide comprehensive methodological details and discuss the translational potential of their findings for clinical practice. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. Discovery and validation of fluid biomarkers in nervous system disorders for disease prediction, diagnosis, classification, and monitoring.
2. Genetic and imaging-based biomarker discovery
3. Understanding the therapeutic potential of biomarkers for nervous system disorders
4. AI-driven biomarker discovery and development for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes
