About this Research Topic

Submission deadlines

  1. Manuscript Extension Submission Deadline 31 October 2026

Background

The ongoing artificial intelligence revolution is transforming the way we approach infectious disease research, with remarkable applications emerging across viral and bacterial pathogen studies. AI-powered platforms have accelerated COVID-19 vaccine development, enabled rapid viral variant detection, and revolutionized bacterial antibiotic resistance surveillance.

Machine learning algorithms continue to achieve breakthrough successes in predicting influenza outbreaks, identifying novel antibacterial compounds, and automating tuberculosis diagnostics. As these computational innovations demonstrate AI's transformative potential for global health challenges, attention is increasingly turning toward malaria research — a disease that continues to affect hundreds of millions globally — where unique complexities present both opportunities and distinct challenges.

The primary aim of this research topic is to advance our understanding of AI applications across the malaria research continuum, from basic discovery through clinical implementation. This includes exploring cutting-edge computational approaches for malaria vaccine and drug target identification, novel diagnostic algorithms achieving field-ready performance, and sophisticated prediction models integrating diverse data sources for proactive intervention strategies. This research topic also aims to address critical implementation challenges including model transferability, ethical deployment considerations, and capacity building in endemic regions.

To gather further insights into AI-driven innovations for malaria research and control, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

• Computational approaches for malaria vaccine design and antigen discovery optimization

• Machine learning applications in antimalarial drug discovery and development pipelines

• AI-powered diagnostic systems for malaria detection, species identification, and resistance monitoring

• Predictive modeling frameworks for outbreak forecasting and intervention planning

• Multi-modal data integration techniques combining genomic, clinical, and environmental datasets

• Explainable AI methodologies for transparent clinical decision support systems

• Ethical frameworks and regulatory pathways for AI-powered malaria interventions

• Novel algorithmic approaches and deployment studies addressing resource constraints in endemic settings

We particularly encourage submissions that address the unique complexities of malaria compared to other infectious diseases, demonstrate innovative solutions for resource-limited environments, and present collaborative efforts between computational researchers and malaria control practitioners. Contributions from endemic country investigators, industry-academic partnerships, and interdisciplinary teams spanning computer science, parasitology, and public health are especially welcome.
