Due to the limitations of traditional materials and the inefficiency of conventional construction methods, traditional infrastructure development leads to significant carbon emissions and resource depletion, which are inconsistent with the requirements of sustainable development. The rapid advancement of advanced composite structures provides a foundation for developing new types of infrastructure that are greener, lower-carbon, more durable, mechanically superior, and smarter. The development of advanced composite materials, the innovative design of composite structures, improvements in construction technologies, advances in life-cycle maintenance, and the innovative application of artificial intelligence all offer promising pathways toward achieving the goal of sustainable infrastructure.
This Research Topic seeks to present cutting-edge research on performance optimization, intelligent design, green construction, and sustainable lifecycle management of advanced composite structures under resource and labor constraints. We encourage the effective integration of high-performance composite materials with emerging technologies such as automation, digital twins, and health monitoring, thereby achieving co-optimization of infrastructure performance, cost, and sustainability. The experimental, simulation-based, or theoretical studies on advanced composite structures are welcome. In particular, submissions focusing on major engineering needs, including but not limited to marine engineering, energy infrastructure, and extraterrestrial construction, are especially preferred.
We welcome submissions on:
• Next-generation composite materials and their practical applications; • High-performance composite structures through innovative composite technologies and design; • Tailored analytical and design methods for composite structures; • Innovative structural health monitoring and maintenance for composite structures; • Effective application of emerging technologies for the development and life-cycle management of composite structures;
Submissions should demonstrate novelty, scalability, clear real-world impact, and address metrics such as carbon, productivity, safety, and durability.
