Background

The rapid proliferation of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Urban Air Mobility (UAM),and low-altitude economy networking has given rise to complex, safety-critical ecosystems where trust, autonomy, and cyber-resilience are paramount. Aerial platforms now rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for perception, navigation, and cooperative flight operations, introducing new vulnerabilities to GPS/ADS-B spoofing, electronic warfare, adversarial attacks on neural networks, and software supply-chain threats. This Research Topic focuses on the design and deployment of trustworthy AI and cyber-resilientframeworks for software-defined aerial vehicles (SDAVs) and multi-UAV ecosystems. It emphasizes deployable solutions for resource-constrained avionics, Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight (BVLOS) missions, and swarm cooperation under adversarial conditions. The objective is to integrate AI assurance, quantum-safe communication, and resilient flight architectures into verifiable, real-world systems validated through flight tests or high-fidelity digital twins, while maintaining compliance with U-Space, FAA Remote ID, and ICAO regulatory frameworks.
